THE KENNEL CLUB SHOW GUNDOG WORKING CERTIFICATE
FOR AV SPANIELS (EXCL IWS)
14th November 2014

Judges John Carter & Will Taylor

Picture
The Show Gundog Working Certificate was held at New Farm, Norton Nr Evesham by the kind permission of Norman and Sandra Onens, with fields of mangel wurzels (this is a form of fodder beet) on which English and French Partridge are the main game available. Both are ideal for Spaniels to hunt, flush and retrieve.  Judges were John Carter and Will Taylor.

The third dog was Bill Cadwell's Sussex Spaniel Jubiwell  Proper Job who hunted well to the corner of one of the field of mangle worzels and flushed a bird which was shot and fell into a hedge of brambles. Bill's dog gamely went into the brambles to retrieve the bird but it had run. He was called back in later for a successful retrieve.
The next dog was Gill Cooper's WSS Fiergen City Limits who hunted well and as soon as we moved to a new field of beet, flushed a partridge, which was shot and brought safely to hand.
Sandy White's Fiergen Steamy Windows was up next but she didn't like the gallery so close to her and struggled to get going.
Next was Kelly Jefferies whose Clumber Sh Ch Jingle Bells hunted well and flushed a partridge. When sent it was a runner and by the time the bird was retrieved the bird had died. The judges put her out for hard mouth, however the Guns liked her performance and gave her the Gun's Choice Award.

Four dogs went to the water, these were Sh Ch Julita Rezanella of Jacranella, Jubiwell Proper Job, Bushwacker Hotspot and Fiergen City Limits.
We made our way to the pond which had a large number of wild ducks on there and our guns were given the opportunity to have some duck shooting. The water was done with dummies, but a good wind blew the dummies toward the edge where the reeds were and this meant that many of the dogs felt that if they waited they didn't need to get their feet wet with a swim. Only one dog passed the water and this was Janey Sutherland's Sh Ch Julita Rezanella of Jacranella, who received her SGWC and made her into a Champion.
Our resident Picking up dog Trek (Field Spaniel) made short work of the spare retrieves

With the Kind permission of Norman Onens

There were 8 dogs entered, including 6 WSS, 1 Clumber and 1 Sussex. Driving to the venue in pouring rain and dark clouds we were concerned that the event would have to be called off as the birds will not fly in the rain and visibility is poor.  The forecast said that the rain would clear before 10.00 and it was good to know that they had it right. The rain cleared and the eventually the sun came out and we were treated to a beautiful sunny and warm day and unimaginable an hour earlier.
First up was Tina Smith with Isfryn Park End JW who hunted well, flushed a bird but sadly failed to pick it up. Next up was Janey Sutherland with Sh Ch Julita Rezanella of Jacranella, whose WSS hunted well and flushed a partridge. Sent out to retrieve, she went to the fall but the bird wasn't found. The judges looked and the bird wasn't found so they put her back in line and within a couple of minutes she flushed and retrieved another bird.

The fourth dog was Ann Lyon's Bushwacker Hotspot, a WSS who was a keen hunter who impressed the Judges with her game finding abilities. She flushed a partridge and retrieved it to hand. She was awarded Best Performance of the Day.

The final dog was Alison Evans' WSS Coedbrain Ryan Ar Nantlle who hunted well but had no luck flushing a bird. Unfortunately he found a pocket of birds in the pens and refused to move from it to carry on hunting.

After the event was declared officially over the handlers were allowed to have a go retrieving the ducks from the water.
